In a move to ensure public safety, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District Education Authority (DEA) in Gujranwala took decisive action on November 13, 2024, by canceling the registration of Fotan Girls Higher Secondary School and Fotan Central High School in Kalaske, Wazirabad. This drastic step came after these schools failed to comply with the Punjab government's orders regarding the temporary closure of schools during the ongoing smog crisis.
Violation of Government Orders
The Punjab government had issued clear guidelines to close schools from November 7 to November 17, 2024, to protect children and staff from the harmful effects of smog. Smog, which is a significant environmental hazard, can lead to serious health issues like respiratory problems, eye irritation, and even long-term conditions such as asthma. Despite these directives, both Fotan Girls Higher Secondary School and Fotan Central High School were found operating during this period.
Authorities, upon visiting the schools, found them open, in direct violation of the government's instructions. This non-compliance led to the cancellation of their registrations and the complete closure of the institutions for the duration of the smog crisis.
The Importance of Following Smog Safety Guidelines
Smog, a dangerous mix of smoke and fog, has become a recurring issue in Pakistan, especially during the winter months. The harmful pollutants in smog can severely affect the health of children and vulnerable individuals, leading to an increase in respiratory diseases. To prevent such health risks, the government took the necessary step of temporarily closing schools and crowded places to minimize exposure.
By enforcing these regulations, the government aims to safeguard public health and reduce the potential harm caused by smog exposure. These actions are essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of students and the broader community.
