Wazirabad (Bureau Chief Adnan Qaiser Butt): The serene skies of Wazirabad and its surrounding villages are now under threat from an alarming increase in bird hunting. In nearby areas such as Dhonkal, Manzoorabad, Veroki, Lowari Wala, Bela, Ahmed Nagar, and Alipur Chattha, hunters roam freely with guns, chasing innocent birds. These individuals, often seen on motorbikes or in vehicles, even trespass into fields to carry out their illegal activities. Equipped with traditional shotguns and even prohibited rifles, these hunters show no regard for the distinction between lawful and unlawful game.

A Dangerous Hobby of the Wealthy

Most of these hunters belong to affluent families, engaging in this cruel activity not out of necessity but as a display of power and skill. For many, it’s nothing more than a shallow hobby to impress others. The worst affected species include doves and sparrows, but even egrets, mynas, and crows are not spared from their relentless targeting. Unfortunately, this inhumane pastime has become a popular sport, with some government employees also joining the trend for leisure.

Wildlife Officials Absent

The absence of oversight by wildlife authorities has allowed this illegal hunting to continue unchecked. Despite the alarming situation, no visible efforts are being made by the concerned departments to stop this ruthless killing of birds. The silence of the responsible authorities raises questions about their negligence, leaving the local bird population vulnerable to extinction.

Prominent social and legal activist Ahmed Usman Khan Lodhi has voiced his concerns, calling upon the Chief Minister of Punjab to take immediate notice of the situation. He emphasized the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect these innocent creatures from unnecessary suffering. Local communities are urging authorities to act swiftly to safeguard their natural environment and ensure these birds remain a part of their daily lives.
